Source: http://www.benfranklinsworld.com/071 Historians refer to the Battle of Saratoga as the “turning point” of the American Revolution. They argue the Patriot Army’s defeat of British General John Burgoyne’s forces convinced the French to enter the War for Independence. Together, French and American forces cornered Charles, Earl Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781 and ended the war. This is the quick version of Saratoga, but as we know, history is more complicated. Today, we explore the Saratoga Campaign of 1777 in more depth with Bruce M. Venter, author of The Battle of Hubbardton: The Rear Guard Action that Saved America. The Saratoga Campaign in 1777 was an attempt by the British high command for North America to gain military control of the strategically important Hudson River valley during the American Revolutionary War.It ended in the surrender of the British army, which historian Edmund Morgan argues, "was a great turning point of the war, because it won for Americans the foreign assistance which was the last element needed for victory. The primary thrust of the campaign was planned and initiated by General John Burgoyne.Commanding a main force of some 8,000 men, he moved south in June from Quebec, boated up Lake Champlain to middle New York, then marched over the divide and down the Hudson Valley to Saratoga. ---Image-Copyright-and-Permission--- About the author(s): John Trumbull (1756–1843) Description American painter Date of birth/death 6 June 1756 10 November 1843 Location of birth/death Lebanon, Connecticut New York City Work location New York, London Authority control VIAF: 56862633 ISNI: 0000 0001 2134 4222 ULAN: 500016000 LCCN: n50011728 WGA: 46060caa-83ea-48ec-9cd7-adf3c7ebc5b4 WorldCat License: Public domain Author(s): John Trumbull (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Trumbull) ---Image-Copyright-and-Permission--- This channel is dedicated to make Wikipedia, one of the biggest knowledge databases in the world available to people with limited vision. Age of Empires 3: The Warchiefs - 05 - Saratoga Walkthrough Gameplay Playthrough PC Hard Difficulty --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The British army's summer push down the Hudson River Valley seemed unstoppable - but their supply lines were thinly stretched." STOP THE BRITISH ADVANCE TO ALBANY PRIMARY OBJECTIVES: DESTROY 3 BRITISH FORT WAGONS Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs is the first official expansion pack for the real-time strategy game Age of Empires III. Act 1: Fire Nathaniel Black (loosely based on Joseph Louis Cook) and his uncle Kanyenke are trying to discourage the Mohawk and the Seneca from fighting in the American Revolutionary War. However, they are ambushed by a group of Mohawks and head to an Oneida village nearby. From there they counter-attack and destroy an enemy Town Center, thus causing their enemies to flee. When Nathaniel and Kanyenke return to their village, they find that the Mohawk and a group of Hessian mercenaries led by Colonel Sven Kuechler, have raided the village and captured Nathaniel's mother, Nonahkee. They rescue Nonahkee, but Kuechler and his main army escape. After this, the Iroquois Confederacy shatters. Nathaniel's village supports the colonists, and Nathaniel heads to Boston where his men help defend a redoubt on Breed's Hill from the British. After George Washington takes command a series of defeats drives the colonials back across the Delaware, where they are joined by Nathaniel. Here Washington leads a small force, including Nathaniel, across the Delaware where they attack a Hessian encampment at Trenton and defeat the rearguard of the army at Princeton. This is followed by another victory at the Battles of Saratoga. However, the army is once again defeated at Brandywine and Germantown and is forced to camp for the winter at Valley Forge, where they suffer greatly from the cold. This leads Nathaniel to use most of his family's fortune to supply the army throughout the winter. The next scenario is the fictional battle of Morristown, where Nathaniel gets his chance for revenge on Kuechler, who leads an attempt to destroy the capitol building of Morristown. Using artillery shipments he receives from Washington, Nathaniel sneaks around the Hessian flank and relieves Morristown. Refusing to accept defeat, Kuechler joins the fight with Nathaniel and is killed. After Kuechler's death, Nathaniel is said to have fought at Charleston, Camden, and King's Mountain. As the tide begins to turn the French join the war and help the revolution gain a victory at Yorktown, where Nathaniel is instrumental in capturing several redoubts. With the revolution won, Nathaniel returns home a poor man having spent his family fortune on the outfitting his volunteers and supplying the troops at Valley Forge. During the epilogue video of the campaign (where Nathaniel is at Yorktown), the "Old Coot" from Act 1 in the previous game (Morgan Black), can be seen watching his great-grandson's victory.

On October 17, 1777, British General John Burgoyne surrendered his army to American forces under the command of General Horatio Gates. This marked the end of an ambitious campaign to isolate the rebellious New England colonies from the rest with a three pincer movement, all leading to Albany, New York. There were two battles at Saratoga. The first, the Battle of Freeman’s Farm, took place on September 19. The second, the Battle of Bemis Heights, took place on October 7. One patriot, Henry Sewall, wrote; “Perhaps an unprecedented Instance that near 6,000 British & foreign Troops, under the command of an accomplish’d General, should surrender themselves Prisoners of War in the field to an Army of raw Continental Troops & Militia!” Burgoyne led his army south from Quebec, expecting to meet Colonel Barry St. Leger and General William Howe in Albany. Instead, Burgoyne’s plan unraveled and his defeat marked the turning point of the American War for Independence. The American rebels proved to the world that they could sustain the fight and match the British in the field. That all changed at Saratoga. The pro-American voices in Parliament grew louder, while France quickly recognized American independence and drastically increased aid to its new ally. However, it would be six long years before the new United States of America would know peace. This episode was written by Michael Gabbe-Gross. Michael Gabbe-Gross received his Masters Degree in History from the California State University, Sacramento. His thesis project analyzed the Phoenix Program, a CIA counterinsurgency operation during the Vietnam War.

The Battles of Saratoga marked the climax of the Saratoga campaign giving a decisive victory to the Americans over the British in the American Revolutionary War.British General John Burgoyne led a large invasion army up the Champlain Valley from Canada, hoping to meet a similar force marching northward from New York City; the southern force never arrived, and Burgoyne was surrounded by American forces in upstate New York.Burgoyne fought two small battles to break out. They took place eighteen days apart on the same ground, 9 miles south of Saratoga, New York. Lead: In 1777, an army led by British General John Burgoyne marched south from Quebec to end the rebellion in the colonies. Instead, it ended in disaster. Intro: A Moment In Time with Dan Roberts. Content: In the summer of 1777, the British Army planned a military campaign that, if successful, would result in the occupation of Albany, New York and control of the Hudson River, thereby separating New England from the southern colonies and forcing an end to the rebellion. Following the plan, General John Burgoyne (called "Gentleman Johnny" by his troops) led them south from Quebec toward Albany. There he would join forces with Brigadier General Barry St. Leger coming from the east and General William Howe coming northward from New York City. If it had worked, the plan would have been devastating. It failed. Benedict Arnold at Fort Stanwix halted St. Leger. Howe changed his plans by diverting his army south to capture Philadelphia. Nevertheless, Burgoyne and his 7,500 soldiers advanced southward, easily recapturing Forts Ticonderoga and Edward on the Upper Hudson, but at that point his plan began to come unglued. A contingent of 800 Brits sent to Burlington, Vermont to seize supplies was ambushed by New England militiamen and virtually wiped out. Cutting a road through thick woods and underbrush, Burgoyne moved slowly along the west bank of the Hudson with heavy supply wagons, horse drawn cannons and two thousand dependents and camp followers. This slow movement gave American forces, under the command of Major General Horatio Gates, time to fortify an area about thirty miles north of Albany on a wooded plateau called Bemis Heights.
